ModeratorIs Kanban a good system for all types of manufacturing facilities, or only larger scale ones? Also, can it be effectively used in other locations such as, for example, an auto mechanics garage? It seems like it would be a good fit in that type of environment, and many others. Has anyone done this type of thing, and if so, what type of adjustments have to be made to use Kanban in an environment that isn’t a traditional manufacturing facility? This seems like a great opportunity for many different places, as long as it is done properly.

ModeratorI have seen Kanban used at a coffee shop. They implemented Kanban to make sure they knew when they were running out of particular coffee beans, syrup flavorings, cups, lids, stoppers, etc. They would have a card showing when they reached their minimum stock qty. The card would tell them how many to order and where to order them from. The employee was responsible for letting the manager know and to make sure the supplies were ordered. It was interesting to see this concept being used in a coffee shop when I have only really seen it in a manufacturing environment.
